A new line of shoes surprises by the material with which they are made. It is a shoe developed by the company Indianes that uses banana fiber extracted from agricultural waste.

The company, founded and directed by Diana Feliu and Iván Rojas inspired by sustainability, works on different lines of shoes in which it uses hemp, natural pigments and even recycles your old shoes.

A product with minimal environmental impact

But the most novel thing is that they have found in banana fiber a solution to the environmental crisis caused by the textile and fashion industries.

This ancestral fiber has been used for centuries by Colombian communities in the Andes mountain range. It is a material that originally does not require water or large areas of land for its cultivation, since it is obtained from the residues of banana agriculture.

This new material took time of research and development to achieve a product that combines: sustainability, social economy, crafts, technology and design.

A comprehensive product

During the agricultural process of plantain tons of residues of these plants are generated.

The banana plant must be cut every year to generate new fruits, for this reason a large amount of agricultural waste is created. About 40% of the stems are discarded.

Local communities and artisans have been able to take advantage of the waste and extract the fiber from the banana plant stem.

After 3 generations, they continue to keep this technique alive and also seek to enhance their tradition and knowledge.

This area was one of the most affected by the guerrillas. Many families had to leave their lands, leave their businesses, and experience great insecurity. Today the area is experiencing a period of development and recovery.

In obtaining the banana fiber, 60 peasant-artisans take part, many of them mothers head of the family.

CO2 reduction

This new product reduces C02 eq emissions by up to 45% compared to a traditional shoe.

Currently 65% ​​of C02 eq emissions from cotton are generated in cultivation and harvest.

While to obtain banana fiber, the emissions generated are close to zero, since the fiber comes from the agricultural residue of the banana crop.
