Red lentil dhal

This is a typical recipe for Indian cuisine, which uses red lentils. These are common lentils, but peeled and they tend to cook faster. It is made with spices and coconut milk, it is a protein dish, with unexpected aromas and flavors.

Exquisite and complete: lentil dhal

For those who like Indian food, this very tasty and nutritious preparation with legumes will be a good option to always have on hand to snack.

Ingredients

  • 250 g red lentils
  • 2 ripe tomatoes
  • 1 onion
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 200 ml of coconut milk
  • 30 g of grated coconut
  • 1 tablespoon of turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon of sweet paprika or paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • Sea salt to taste
  • Some coriander leaves to decorate

Instructions

  1. Put a pot on the fire with plenty of water and cook the lentils for about 20 minutes. Or until they are tender. Drain, wash and reserve.
  2. Peel and finely chop the onion and tomatoes. Put them in a large saucepan with the olive oil and cook over medium heat until they start to brown.
  3. Add the minced garlic, pepper, turmeric, cumin powder and paprika, stir and cook for a couple of minutes all together.
  4. Add the lentils and stir well.
  5. Cover with the coconut milk and add the cumin, the cinnamon stick and the grated coconut. Add salt to taste.
  6. Let cook for about 15 minutes or until the coconut milk has been consumed.
  7. Garnish with a little paprika and some coriander leaves.

For an even more Indian touch you can add ginger (about 5 cm of ginger root) at the beginning, when the onion and tomato are sautéed.
If you have never used red lentils, keep in mind that it cooks much faster than the lentils we usually use, since they are peeled lentils.
