The Faculty of Agronomy of the University of Buenos Aires rejects the draft amendment to the Seed law

Understanding that the attempt to modify the Seed Law is a fundamental issue for our country and that the positioning of our faculty in relation to it is extremely relevant, from our space in the Board of Directors at the beginning of the year we presented a project for the Faculty to take a position against the draft amendment of the Seed Law that was under parliamentary treatment and that was detrimental to the rights already acquired by the producers, in pursuit of an expansion of the appropriation and control of seeds by seed companies and multinationals, putting our country's food sovereignty at risk.

After in-depth work in the Commission and after having proposed and organized an Open Debate from that same space so that the entire educational community can be informed and participate in the discussion and thus be able to take a position as an Institution in this regard, today (25 September) the project was discussed at the Board of Directors' meeting.

After a historic session, the project was approved and our Faculty rejects the modification of the Seed Law that was under parliamentary treatment, and establishes the need for a comprehensive reform of the law through a participatory process, which fundamentally does not alter the right to own use of the producers and does not allow discoveries to be included within its scope, respect the laws and agreements in force, explicitly prohibit the existence of bilateral contracts and have a specific framework that protects native and creole seeds.

From Cambium we believe in the importance of bringing these discussions to our Faculty, which put into discussion what productive and agri-food model we want for our country, and we hope with this to be able to contribute so that we can all inform, rethink and act accordingly as future professionals. At the same time, we hope that the positioning of our faculty will help to stop this attempt to modify the law, and promote a comprehensive reform of the law that guarantees and protects the sovereignty of our peoples.
