The new connectivity networks with 5G technology carry unprecedented risks to health and the environment, to human, animal and plant life. This being a fundamental aspect, for which its expansion should not be allowed, it is only one of the many problems that its development implies.
They are a crucial element of great transformations - mostly negative - in multiple aspects of the economic, political and social life of the countries. They will radically affect the production of services and international trade, and will provide new forms of surveillance and control, all centralized in the hands of a few transnational companies and some governments. For both China and the United States, the expansion of 5G technology is a government policy, which is the background to the blockade of Huawei, since China is more advanced in its development.
5G networks, so called because they are the fifth generation of wireless communication networks, promise to be significantly faster and with more capacity to transmit data (higher bandwidth), so they could cover a much greater number of connections in the same space. The idea is to increase the download speed up to 20 times faster than with current 4G networks. 5G technology is not only a development of the previous ones, it also changes the wave frequency with which it is transmitted. Add a millimeter wave frequency, much shorter than the previous ones and with a much higher density. As its range of reach is significantly smaller, in order for it to replace current networks and expand its potential, it would be necessary to install a huge number of short-range antennas, every 100 meters (10-12 houses) in urban areas. These will in turn be connected to a dense network of thousands of low-altitude satellites, for which their promoters assure that they could connect any area on the planet and that they will not suffer transmission cuts.
This ability to connect more devices to wireless networks will make a quantitative leap to theinternet of things, which refers to the wireless connections between all kinds of industrial and domestic appliances - from telephones, computers, screens, cameras and cars that see us, coffee machines, stoves, refrigerators, beds and other “smart” furniture, cars, devices health, all connected to our medical, employment, credit, educational records, consumption habits, free time activities, etc. Also in open environments or shopping malls, educational centers and public attention, an exponential multiplication of connectivity, surveillance, tracking and identification systems will be possible, framed in the so-called “smart cities”, with a multiplication of drones and unmanned vehicles for services , deliveries and surveillance.
All this represents an invasion of spaces, minds and bodies as we could never have imagined before, and is also an inexhaustible source of data about us and the social body, to sell to insurance companies, medicines and many other goods, and even to political entities and electoral manipulation, as Sally Burch explains.
Along with this, the exposure to electromagnetic radiation of people and all living beings will increase exponentially, an issue already pending with existing communication networks. On the latter, there are numerous studies showing the risks of radiation related to the use of mobile phones and Wi-Fi. The Council of Europe, for example, declared since 2011 (EC resolution 1815) that the public should be informed about the risks, lower the level of permitted frequencies, limit wireless connections and replace them with wired connections in schools, libraries and public places. , because the risk is greater for girls and boys.
A series of scientific studies report that these electromagnetic radiations produce cellular stress, genetic damage and damage to the reproductive system, attention and learning deficits, neurological disorders and, by combination of several factors, potentially cancer. The orientation systems of birds, bees, ants, frogs, among other animals that have been studied, also intervene. Katie Singer, author of the bookAn electronic silent spring reports on several of these studies, also on human impacts.
However, the dense network of millimeter microwaves and a layer of electromagnetic radiation to which the massive installation of networks with 5G technology would expose us is unprecedented. Both due to the type of waves, the increase in the number of transmitting and receiving devices, the continuity and regularity of use, the satellite network to communicate with each other and the global expansion project to all corners of the planet. For all this, a group of doctors and scientists from various countries began an international call (An Emergency Appeal to the Governments of the World by Scientists, Doctors, Environmental Organizations and Others) directed to the United Nations, with reference to several studies, to stop the deployment of these networks. It is urgent to know and expand the debate, there is too much at stake.
