The Tesla Solar Roof, cheaper than a normal roof

The Tesla Solar Roof, cheaper than a normal roof

Tesla opened orders for its long-awaited sunroof. On average, the Tesla solar roof costs $ 235 per square meter, which is less than the cost of a normal roof, even without the energy savings.

The cost of a Tesla solar roof ultimately depends on the amount of power you need and the percentage of active solar panels on the roof. To help people determine that, Tesla also released a sunroof calculator with the launch so that people can accurately estimate the cost and amount of money the roof will save them over time.

Solar roofs will be able to be installed in the United States this summer and should ultimately pay for themselves, which Tesla says makes them significantly more affordable than regular roofs. Also, the sunroof is stronger and lighter than a typical roof, as Elon Musk demonstrated on Instagram.

And even though Elon Musk joked that he wasn't going to make the shingle warranty infinite, it turns out he changed his mind. "We offer the best warranty in the industry - the life of your home or infinity, whichever comes first," a Tesla representative tells Inverse.

According to Tesla, the Tesla sunroof is made of tempered glass, making them three times stronger than things like slate or asphalt shingles. They are also half as heavy as other roofing methods. On a full roof, the shingles will be a mix of active and non-active solar shingles. And while Consumer Reports found that a sunroof needs to be $ 24.50 per square foot to compete with other types of roofs, the Tesla sunroof costs $ 21.85, with 35 percent of the roof active solar.

To determine the cost of a solar roof, consider how much of the roof can be an active solar tile and how much only non-active glass tiles will be. A glass tile without the solar elements costs $ 119 per square meter, and the solar panels themselves are $ 452 per square meter. For most homes, Tesla says that only about 40 percent of the roof will be active solar, but the percentage of active tiles depends on how much power a home needs.

If you want to price your own roof, you can use the Tesla Solar Calculator to determine the amount of energy a solar roof will produce over 30 years, the fixed cost of buying a roof for your home, and even adjust the cost based on your receipt. of the light.

Of the four tile options, smooth and textured gray black glass tiles are open upon request, and slate and Tuscan-style tiles will launch in early 2019. Within the United States, Tesla plans to begin installing solar roofs from immediate, and will begin installation outside the US in early 2019. Tesla says installation will take between five and seven days, and will be entirely managed by the company itself.

With all the sunroof announcements, Musk took a moment to upload another type of recommendation for solar shingles. He posted a video of a hail ball hitting a solar tile, leaving the solar tile completely unscathed.
