It is said in politics that when a sector manages to make another sector grant everything that the first asked for, it becomes emboldened and goes for more. It seems to be the case of the relationship between mining and the Government of Mauricio Macri. It is that after obtaining the removal of withholdings, the authorization for the repatriation of capital and the devaluation of the currency, now businessmen in the sector sat down with two PRO Executive Ministries to advance in the change of curricula and school manuals so that they do not say more than mining it is polluting.
According to an article on the BAE portal, companies and chambers of the sector met at a dialogue table with the Ministry of Education -in charge of Esteban Bullrich- and his Energy counterpart -headed by Juan José Aranguren- and have advanced the issue, both that the Federal Mining Agreement that is about to be signed will open the doors for these unusual school modifications.
And he added: "We have a sustainable mining program, that schools create that awareness in young people, it does not go hand in hand. We must break those schemes and be able to explain to schools and children what mining means. If not , there could be no mining in Australia or Canada. "
Also with the endorsement of the Government, the mining entrepreneurs began to soften the issue with visits and talks in schools, so much so that they were already at the Buenos Aires National School and the ORT and, according to Álvarez, they had already been called from other schools. Shortly, they will be at the Florence Nightingale School in Acassuso, where they will give talks at the primary and secondary levels, and in other schools, as confirmed by the director of Corporate Affairs of the Cerro Negro mining company.
"Part of the Natural Sciences curriculum could be changed, it will depend on the development of mining in the country. If we have a mining development like Chile had, not only will the curriculum be changed, but we will also seek to generate more study spaces in the universities . We do not have the amount of people prepared for the mining development that we hope, if it were developed we would not have the trained human resources, "he said.
However, the mining chamber is not satisfied with telling Macri what to teach in schools and has more requests in the pipeline. According to the same medium, businessmen want to advance with miners in at least three of the 7 provinces in which it is prohibited and try to achieve a change in the tax model for a progressive model based on international sales and prices. The biggest concern of the sector is whether the course will be consolidated in the next elections or not.
"The education manuals of primary and secondary schools continue to treat mining as a polluting activity, when the country promotes the development of mining," Marcelo Álvarez, president of the Argentine Chamber of Mining Entrepreneurs, tried as an explanation.
Chubut, Córdoba, Mendoza, La Rioja and Santa Fé, among others, are prohibited from mining. Some by law, others prohibit the use of cyanide or open pit mining. "We think that from the dialogue mining can be unlocked in Mendoza, we have already generated a dialogue table with the different actors in the province to evaluate the development of mining and we have already delivered the conclusions. We believe that in Mendoza we can advance in the dialogue "Alvarez raised with respect to the province led by the macrista ally Alfredo Cornejo.
Another territory that worries businessmen in the sector is Chubut, the province governed by Mario Das Neves, which is prohibited from open-pit mining. Not surprisingly, Pan American Silver has three mining projects in the country: Calcatreu, Manantial Espejo and Proyecto Navidad, the latter is the world's largest silver reserve located precisely on Chubut soil, a project for which an investment was announced of 1,000 million dollars. Yamana Gold also has another project in Esquel. Córdoba is another province that worries them. "There is a ruling of the Court, the issue is judicialized, it is more difficult. But we will try to find ways of consensus," said the president of CAEM.
The president of CAEM explains the interest: "In Chubut the problem is more complex due to the position of the governor, we are insisting on dialogue because we want to unlock it. Neither Panamerican Silver at Christmas nor Yamana in Esquel will use cyanide, that is resolved and the use of water will not affect the province. Governor Das Neves should help us work with the people, there are possibilities of restarting underground mining and not open pit. The Christmas project would allow the number of employees to double, exports and even the GDP ".
