"The results show that the population prefers a new energy policy and does not want new nuclear plants," said Energy Minister Doris Leuthard. He added that the law will boost domestic renewable energy, reduce the use of fossil fuels and reduce dependence on foreign supplies.
The final provisional figures showed 58.2 percent support for the initiative that seeks to reduce dependence on nuclear energy, based on the debate that took place in the country after the damage caused by the Fukushima disaster in Japan in 2011 .
"The law leads our country to a modern energy future," Leuthard said at a press conference, adding that some parts of the law would take effect in early 2018.
