A score of dead dolphins were found in a sector of the Georgian coast of the Black Sea, about 380 kilometers west of Tbilisi, the local television station Imedi reported today.

"Everything indicates that the dolphins died from morbillivirus," declared Archil Fuchmanidze, spokesman for the National Environmental Protection Agency.

Dolphin morbillivirus (DMV) is highly contagious and attacks the immune system of these mammals, causing various diseases that impair their ability to swim and stay afloat.

Although it has not been shown that this virus can be transmitted to humans, Fuchmanidze called on the population not to touch the dead dolphins that they find stranded on the coast as a precautionary measure.

According to Imedi, dead dolphins have also been found off the coast of Abkhazia, a separatist region in the northwest of the country.
