The planet's average temperature in 2015 was the highest since climate records began 136 years ago, according to an annual report released by NASA and the U.S. Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The temperature of the Earth's land and ocean surface was 0.9 degrees Celsius above the average recorded during the 20th century, which is 13.9 degrees Celsius, according to the study.

In fact, 2015 was 0.13 degrees Celsius warmer than 2014, the year that set the previous record for the highest temperatures, according to the US Space Agency.
