Broccoli is a super vegetable. Broccoli sprouts contain compounds that represent an excellent source of bioactive phytochemicals such as vitamins, flavonoids, hydroxycinnamic acids, and glucosinolates. This makes it beneficial for fighting various types of cancer and also effective against neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases.

But there is an even better broccoli. The super broccoli is called bimi. It is a new natural hybrid between broccoli and Chinese green cabbage, a variety that is grown in Murcia, but that is hardly marketed in Spain. It is marketed worldwide under different trade names such as bimi, tenderstem or bellaverde.

Now, researchers from the School of Agricultural Engineers and the Institute of Plant Biotechnology (IBV) of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) have determined how to enhance a large amount of bioactive compounds of an anticancer, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory nature in bimi.

This particular vegetable has a small broccoli-like foil and a tender stem like that of an asparagus. Its flavor is milder and sweeter than that of conventional broccoli, which makes it an excellent product to be consumed both raw, in salads or snacks, as well as cooked. Among its properties is its ability to prevent cardiovascular diseases and the formation of cataracts. The study has led to several publications in high-impact scientific journals.

In collaboration with the Reina Sofía University General Hospital in Murcia, the doctoral thesis –published in several scientific journals– has studied the use of bimi nutrients that the human body makes.

The conclusion is that certain anticancer compounds typical of this new broccoli report a high absorption among the volunteers subjected to these tests, compared to other vegetables such as conventional broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage.

The thesis analyzes the different beneficial compounds for the health of the new vegetable. In addition to the aforementioned properties, bimi contains other essential nutrients for health such as calcium, fiber, proteins and fatty acids such as a-linolenic.
