Reshape is an online platform that promotes research, education and the production of digital ideas. Every year it holds a global competition with the most innovative proposals. The jury is made up of experts in fashion design, digital fabrication, and computational design.
This year they received 70 proposals from 25 countries. Of all of them, one managed to attract the attention of the judges equally and won first place in Reshape15: Wearable Technology Competition.
The successful project is about a bikini that cleans the sea. This innovation was carried out by a team of engineers from the University of California Riverside.
"Sponge Suit" is the name of the smart swimsuit and it is made with 3D printing. The idea is to combine swimming with respect for the environment.
While the person bathes in the sea, the materials that make up the bikini help to clean it from industrial waste and oil spills. It is made of a 3D printed elastic plastic, which works as a wrap and adapts to the shape of the body.
Inside that shell, is the material called sponge. A hydrophobic carbon that can absorb anything except water. It has the function of separating the contaminants from the liquid.
Furthermore, due to its porous nature, it attracts more than 25 times its own weight. The important thing is that the material is not in contact with the skin, therefore it protects the person from contaminants. The latter come off only if the sponge is heated to 1,000 degrees Celsius.
It can be reused up to 20 times without losing its ability to absorb contaminants.
