A spectacular red moon is approaching that, apparently, will give a great show in South America on September 27 when it is stained with "blood" and prevails in the sky to be admired in almost the entire continent. The natural phenomenon will be the fourth and last eclipse of the tetrad, which would fulfill the biblical prophecy of the apocalypse or end of the world, something that is already debated on social networks and that in many believers is causing fear.
Scientists debunk that belief time and again, insisting that the bloody moon takes on those reddish hues during the eclipse because particles in Earth's atmosphere refract sunlight and only let through the red light that gives the Moon that strange glow. . It is the same phenomenon that dyes the clouds orange during the sunset, they maintain from astronomy.
"In theory, the moon should disappear, since the earth's shadow prevents the sun's rays from striking its surface, but our atmosphere acts in two ways: deflecting and absorbing the blue colors of the sun's rays. The consequence is that a reddish light illuminates the lunar surface at the time of totality ", Miguel Serra-Ricart, an astronomer at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, explained to Spanish Television.
For example, in Argentina, the beginning of the penumbral eclipse will be at 9:12 p.m. and it can be enjoyed equally in all provinces. The start of the partial eclipse is expected at 22:07. However, astronomers reported that the maximum eclipse will occur at 23:47 when the moon is at an altitude of 51 ° and will end at 02:22. The natural phenomenon will be fully visible from South America, Central America, eastern North America, Europe east of Germany, and northwestern Africa.
This image shows the world map with two regions: the shaded region, where the lunar eclipse cannot be seen, and the blank region, where it can be seen. The image details the type of eclipse, the magnitude of the penumbra, the magnitude of the umbra, the Saros series to which this eclipse belongs, among other data.
The date and time shown in this image are international date and time, therefore, it may not apply to all countries equally. However, to know the exact date and time of the total lunar eclipse in your country, you can enter this NASA calculator: http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/JLEX/JLEX-index.html in English or at http://www.vercalendario.info/es/luna/espana-28-setember-2015.html and select your country.
Germán Puerta Restrepo, astronomer and scientific advisor to the Bogotá Planetarium, explained that this phenomenon generated all kinds of myths and superstitions in ancient times, although not so much anymore. However, this is the last of four eclipses that occurred between April 2014 and September 2015, a phenomenon that according to NASA will only be repeated seven times this century.
In the Bible, the "bloody moon" represents the end of the world known as Revelation. In ancient times, humans believed that the moon was red. In addition, there is a connection with a passage from the Old Testament of the Bible that, as if it were a sign of doom, says: "The sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood before the great and dreadful day of the Lord comes." (Joel, 2:31).
For the Mayan culture, the eclipse signified the "fight" and "wrath of the gods". To prevent "the Sun from eating the Moon," they set off cans and pyrotechnics, which is why it has been a party for decades.
