A properly designed and used dry toilet should not smell at all. Urine is the biggest challenge for these types of toilets due to ammonia and the large amount of liquid that must evaporate or drain. Tank emptying generally requires the chamber to be off the ground, so access is difficult, unless a pump is used. Diverting the urine to a shallow blind sump prevents access to the compost pile.
