Cuba eliminates substances that deplete the ozone layer

By Lisandra Gómez Guerra

In more than 20 years, the total destruction of these gases is expected, which will allow a considerable reduction in the impact on the ozone layer.

The foregoing was made known by specialists during a visit to the Siguaney Cement Factory, in this province, where before the end of 2014 the plant for the destruction of the aforementioned substances will be put into operation.

Jorge Félix Pérez Lorenzo, the automatic specialist at this center, located in the Taguasco municipality of Espiritu, explained that the assembly process is already nearing completion in furnace four and then the plant will be visited by specialists from the Spanish firm Miesa Exportizacion SL, which provided the automated technology, in order to determine the start date.

The plant for the destruction of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) that is built on land in Espirituan, the only one of its kind in Latin America and the Caribbean, is the result of the efforts of the Multilateral Fund of the Montreal Protocol, through the United Nations Program to Development (UNDP), and Cuba, with an unquestionable reputation in caring for and protecting the environment.

According to Pérez Lorenzo, it is a demonstrative purpose for countries like ours, which, although they do not make up the list of First World nations, do remain at the forefront in the elimination of ODS.

The cost of the equipment purchased for the factory has been valued at about $ 250,000, as well as another important amount in national currency.

Modern technologies have already been installed in the plant, such as equipment for the regeneration of refrigerant gases, which will save the country convertible currency due to imports.
