A concept that is gaining more and more acceptance in the medical and scientific environment, refers to the need to maintain a balance between acidic substances and basic or alkaline substances contained in our body. This issue is of utmost importance, if one takes into account that the generation and spread of infections caused by bacteria, the proliferation of harmful fungi and everything that promotes the disease, inevitably requires an acid environment for its development.

It follows that the survival of these infectious agents is very difficult, if not impossible, in the presence of alkaline substances inside our body. This is how, due to erratic and unhealthy eating habits, our body accumulates acidic substances, with which we generate an internal environment conducive to disease. There are thousands of autopsies performed on people who died due to cancer, in which the common denominator was the abundant presence of the fungus known as Candida albicans, a fact that allows confirming the antecedent of inappropriate eating habits that, Due to their acidifying effect, they have promoted the development of this lethal fungus, as well as pathogens that cause multiple diseases.

Of course, what is described does not mean that it is convenient for our body to have a completely alkaline environment, since it is clear that both excesses can be equally lethal. Minerals such as potassium, calcium, sodium, and magnesium form alkaline reactions in the body and are found mainly in fruits and vegetables. Contrarily, foods that contain iron, sulfur and phosphorus such as meats, eggs, dairy products and nuts, are acidity promoters.

The problem does not consist in accepting some and discarding others, because acids are to a certain extent also essential for the body, since their action is closely related to the contribution of vitamins, proteins, the supply of fats and fibers.

Ideally, our diet is composed of 20 or 25% acidic foods and 75 or 80% alkaline foods. Therein lies the true secret of health. Only in this way can we gradually create a balanced environment within our body, in such a way that it protects us from disease and cell deterioration. This is precisely one of the main virtues of fruits, since they are mostly alkaline in nature, and although some, such as citrus fruits, have an acid taste, their effect on the body once they have been metabolized is completely basic or alkaline.

It is worth noting for a moment to leave the central theme, to highlight the importance of alkalizing foods other than fruits, using a solution prepared with half a teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate dissolved in a liter of water. Here the blood performs an invaluable job by collecting in the liver the oxygen and nutrients required by the 60 trillion cells that make up the human body, and once the blood deposits these nutrients in each cell, it simultaneously collects toxic waste, especially acids that are derived from the metabolic process, to discharge them upon their return in the different organs that are in charge of eliminating such toxins. In this way, the kidney fulfills its purifying action using urine, the intestine through deposition, the skin through sweat and the lungs with their respiratory function. From all of the above, the need to supply the body with a diet rich in alkalis or alkaline elements, so that the blood can more easily counteract the body acidity.

But here it is convenient to remember something that is very important. When an excess of acids is present in the body and at the same time there is not an adequate supply of alkaline foods that allow seeking balance, the blood is necessarily forced to seek that alkalinity in other sources such as bones, joints and mucous membranes , thus initiating a corrosive process, both in the bone system and in the arterial system, with all its sequelae of arthritic and circulatory disorders.

In addition to the above, excess acidity forces all the body's organs to protect themselves by an envelope of lipids that gradually accumulate and that although in principle they manage to slow down the rigors of that acidic environment, over time they begin to atrophy and to inhibit the function of each organ, and of course, to promote obesity. Thus, for example, a pancreas saturated with fat, will necessarily affect its ability to secrete insulin, with which carbohydrates or sugars cannot be eliminated properly, thereby causing alterations in glycemia and surely the beginning of terrible diabetes.

Although it can be said without fear that most of the fruits are essentially alkaline in nature, it is worth mentioning those in which this condition is most evident. Thus, within this very benefactor group we have varieties such as coconut, prunes, papaya, mango, medlar, sapote, watermelon, pear, grape, apple, apricot, avocado, Banana, melon, cherries, figs, dates, grapefruit, lime, orange, lemon, peach, pineapple, raspberry and mandarin. As can be seen, the spectrum of fruits with this healthy condition is quite wide, with which we can moderate that generalized propensity towards intestinal acidity and favor our health in the process.
