Beyond the ecological footprint

Beyond the ecological footprint

By Carlos Fermín

By NOT assuming social responsibility with the ecosystems that lie on planet Earth, the well-being of Nature is put at risk.

When we take the keys, start the car engine and speed to the office, the university, or the supermarket, we always think about working, studying or shopping, but we never meditate on the price to pay for abusing the geographical area. You want to get to those places on time in Switzerland, without measuring the polluted air that comes out through the exhaust pipe, without recycling the plastic in which the vegetables are wrapped, and wasting a lot of paper when printing the biology report.

It is the reflection of a modus vivendi totally elusive to Environmental Education, and that conspires with citizen indifference to never reflect, denounce or remedy these grievances in their localities. In turn, the lack of public policies of the governments of the moment, which force to transfer ecological values to the streets and Latin American schools, establishes an irreparable deterioration in the health of habitats. The worrying thing is that environmental lack of control does not distinguish social stratum, economic power or ethnic race to which you belong, since it is a holistic problem that deserves decisions and positive actions in each one of us, to start dreaming of a new life perspective. With just giving smiles to others, hugging family affectionately, being aware of friends and not being afraid to ask for help, we will be sowing the seeds of the green future to be discovered.

The unfortunate thing is that the urban madness that is expressed when we despair by honking the horn in the noisy city traffic, with the exaggerated night lights that illuminate the shopping centers and with the domestic garbage that ends up submerged in the rivers, leaves a great pollution that environmentally It generates noise, light and water pollution, but which in emotional terms produces general anxiety, hostility and annoyance. That is why we ask ourselves, how do these bad thoughts affect the environment? We see that the media enslavement created by Modern Society is in charge of annihilating the environmental judgment in the minds of the victims, who do not recognize their participatory and leading role in the protection or destruction of Nature. For them, anything is more important than practicing the conservation task, because Gaia is not the one who ends up paying the expired bill for electricity, water, telephone and gas. However, this negative way of thinking completely disconnects us from the culture of recycling, energy efficiency, renewable energy sources (wind, solar, hydraulic, geothermal) and the rational use of drinking water. Nobody wants sandalwood-scented incense anymore, because they prefer to sell the transgenic seed to the holy innocents. In the blink of an eye, they forgot the altruistic sense that permeated their lives, and became robots that only think about making money, getting married in church, having many children and never looking in the mirror. For the men and women of the glorious 21st century, the end always justifies the means to achieve it, demonstrating the ancient erratic course of the world.

For this reason, it is illogical to know that the ecological footprint is an archaic indicator that measures the environmental impact caused by human activities, which demand the progressive use of the natural resources of planet Earth. In addition, it seems that scientists at the University of Toronto in Canada were not wrong when detecting in the atmosphere the artificial gas Perfluorotributylamine (PFTBA), which is 7000 times more polluting than the well-known carbon dioxide (CO2), and that is coming employing in the manufacture of electronic parts on a global scale. The mentioned synthetic compound could be with us for more than 100 years, before its aggressive toxicity dissipates. That would be a catastrophe of biblical proportions for the World, which would leave the traditional Greenhouse Effect, Climate Change and Global Warming in the fateful book of memories.

Perhaps the hourglass has already started to run out of needles in the desert drought. However, we all know that the transnationals will continue to dress Uncle Sam's heirs in consumerism, until death separates them in capitalist hell. Therefore, we must wake up from lethargy and not fall prey to the clutches of ecocide. It is absurd to ask wild people to assimilate environmental concepts extremely far from ordinary practice that they collate every day. We affirm this, since in the world of ecology, facts are worth much more than words, and it is up to us to foster common interest in real people who hope to reinvent their way of life. We believe that will, introspection and discernment are the great allies to change the passive attitude and generate three positive responses for change.

Spiritual Reinvention

To achieve a positive state in the interaction of the Man-Middle-Society trinomial, it is vital to have the will to learn from mistakes and accept our weaknesses. It is not about pointing out culprits, ogres and executioners in the horror movie, but about understanding that planet Earth is our best friend in life, the refuge that gives us a safe roof to live in, and the hope of preserving the sacred prayer. divine. Despite the fact that the irrational hand of Man has made it the scene of wars, deaths and stray bullets; We must not extrapolate that chaotic reality with the magic that ecosystems, biodiversity and beautiful landscapes treasure that invite relaxation.

If we come to think that Pachamama is vindictive and spiteful for allowing all the street warmongering that governs the foundations of Humanity, we would be falling into the devil's furious trap. Let us not forget that most of the calamities caused by the onslaught of Nature are the result of the continuous exploitation of resources at an international level, and of the vertiginous urban development in protected green areas. The grace of Gaia teaches us to contemplate life within a conservationist perspective, which removes the blindfold to see the World with a critical, objective and humanistic approach.

The injection of values and virtues is essential, such as honesty, patience, tolerance, empathy and forgiveness, which help to heal the wounds of the past and maintain control in adverse situations. Thus, the mental health that dreams of achieving self-discovery is improved. It is not about living on the air, under a tree or suppressing pain, but trying to connect with the peace that radiates from the chirping of birds, the waves of the sea, the sunset or the night breeze. Nor is it a matter of making expensive tourist trips in search of adventures and experiences, which we can often find in front of the door of our house, in the park that we never visit or adopting a pet to keep us company. By taking advantage of the pleasant climate that Nature offers, we will be able to carefully analyze those daily problems that we have not yet solved, and thus find a peaceful way to solve them.

Socio-cultural reinvention

When we verify that direct contact with the Environment generates greater peace and harmony among citizens, we begin to be surprised by the majesty of Nature, the nobility of biodiversity and the richness of ecosystems. Without realizing it, we leave the car parked in the home garage, and we prefer to walk to the office, the university or the supermarket, to admire those large leafy trees, take a photo with the cell phone of the restless hummingbird, give names to those figurative clouds in the blue sky or feed the mongrel dog that wandered in front of the bank.

Little by little, it becomes a healthy habit to interact with the natural environment, and we no longer want to spend the weekend watching television and drinking beers, but jogging, running and cycling during a sunny Sunday afternoon, together with our family, friends and neighbors. In this way, we are rescuing the sense of belonging in the inhabitants, who are interested in knowing the living history of the places they visit, which were most likely visited by their grandparents, but which due to the global industrialization process were neglected or converted in grocery stores, shopping centers, and corporate buildings.

At the same time, they are discovering other public spaces that they never thought they would find throughout the territories they host. The power of introspection shows that we are part of an integral context that influences thoughts, mood and interpersonal relationships. Suddenly, everything comes to life and color around us, now we want to know what that species of native tree is called, how many rivers run through the city, or where the stones that we step on in the stream come from. Each question brings us closer to projecting the conservationist work in the communities, since the degree of environmental contamination awaiting these sites is also observed, creating a communicative link for all civil society, which in the end has an impact on the preservation of its own idiosyncrasy.

Green reinvention

By growing spiritually and enjoying greater social awareness, we can internalize the importance of protecting natural resources in the mind and in the heart, which will allow us to externalize that new knowledge acquired in the surrounding bio-physical environment. It is no longer enough to estimate the Environment, so we want to transfer the ecological value to our home, in order to lead a sustainable and sustainable way of life, thanks to the fact that we have the necessary discernment to understand that the individual positive changes that I adopt on a daily basis, they will translate into a better quality of life for the entire community.

This is how the environmental obligations that we related at the beginning of the article become a duty and even a joyous task to share. There are no good and bad decisions here, since any green action that you dare to take adds more and more reasons not to fall into the vice of environmental apathy. That is why we began to practice Energy Efficiency, quickly turning off electrical equipment after using it. It is common when we leave the house or before going to sleep, leaving the television, air conditioning, DVD player, video game console or desktop PC on. It is worth clarifying that the energy waste of the computer is even greater, since the monitor, the printer, the horns, the modem, the scanner and other peripherals that waste electricity are also left on.

The abuse of electricity consumption due to the exaggerated demand for energy, forces us to press the OFF button without hesitation. Before leaving the house, we must be aware of turning off the light bulbs in the kitchen, bedrooms, living rooms, bathrooms and hallways. The myth of leaving the lights on to prevent the entry of thieves who take advantage of our absence, ends up unleashing a high cost in the monthly billing of the service, and eventual blackouts due to the saturation of the regional electricity system. It is advisable to use compact fluorescent lamps, and forget about the legendary incandescent bulbs that pollute the environment.

In parallel, it is crucial to unplug from the power socket, all chargers that include portable technological equipment, such as cell phones, mp3 players, laptops, tablets and digital cameras. After the lithium battery is fully charged, we must disconnect the wall charger and store it until its next use. All these devices come with manuals and instructions in which the exact time the battery is charged is specified, being necessary to read that information and not leave them plugged in for being ignorant. Let us remember that the so-called “energy at rest” or Stand-by, continues to consume electrical energy, which requires using the equipment wisely.

When it comes to household appliances, it is important to organize ourselves when using the washing machine, dryer and iron. Due to the current pace of life, it is common to turn them on almost every day to have that garment that we will wear today ready. But, it is known that these devices use a lot of electrical energy, above all, without being turned on and off in a minimum period of time. It is necessary to organize and allocate a specific day to fulfill the activities, creating a timed schedule and prioritizing the garments that we are actually going to wear during the week. It should be noted that turning on the heating in homes represents another abuse of electricity consumption, due to the bad habit of keeping it on 24 hours a day. Other equipment to use with conscience, include the microwave, freezer and stoves.

By embracing energy savings, we are now ready to face new ecological challenges. Undoubtedly, the rational use of water is an inexcusable commitment for anyone who projects the conservation of the environment. In previous articles, we have emphasized the importance of not wasting liters of drinking water, thinking of those humble Latin American families who do not have the vital liquid, because of the irrationality that accompanies the rest of the citizenry. Although it may seem far-fetched, many individuals leave the sink, shower, or dishwasher faucet running on a whim. Thus, drinking water is wasted everywhere, which apart from being extremely shocking for those of us who defend Nature's resources, generates problems in the supply of the chemical for the other inhabitants.

While brushing your teeth or lathering your body when bathing, you must prevent the water from falling on the ground of environmental anarchy. In the case of using hoses to water the plants in the garden, wash the car or disinfect the floors, it is necessary to use only the amount of water necessary to carry out these activities, since we frequently let the water out of the hose, while we talk with the neighbors, we take a phone call or just for fun. It is better to fill a bucket with water, and recharge it as we clean, so we are aware of how much drinking water we are using, reducing the loss of the precious liquid. We do not recommend taking the car to car washes or hiring private cleaning services, since they are very expensive and waste thousands of liters of water to justify the exaggerated charge.

We already understood that water must be used with rationality and equity, so it is time to know the meaning of the valuable 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle). It is the icing on the ecological cake that we will learn to digest, classify and adopt naturally at home. Let's be honest, recycling is a very controversial subject, since for decades American movies, soap operas and the cultural vision that we receive from parents, have made us believe that recycling is a nauseating task, associated with the homeless of the streets, with collecting cans and even with crime. For this reason, the ego that prevails in the way of life of each person, predisposes him to not want to practice recycling in his home, without knowing that he is making a serious reading error.

In contrast, recycling is part of the socio-environmental responsibility that we all must assume with the well-being of the environment. It is the most genuine condition of a true ecological conscience, and it is reflected by separating organic and inorganic waste. The problem is that we do not have the support of the communities for recycling to take hold in the reality of the villages. We all know that the domestic garbage generated daily will end up polluting rivers, lakes and streams. It also hurts us to appreciate how vegetation is destroyed and wooded areas are deforested, to build improvised open-air dumps, where solid waste that produces higher levels of pollution in cities is burned.

Because of this, it is essential to reverse the negative environmental situation, understanding that the endogenous growth of the community begins by changing bad habits at home, so as not to be complicit in the ecocide perpetrated by the rest of the blinded population. In order to achieve this, we must first avoid the automatism of throwing waste into the generic trash container. Then, it would be beneficial to search for educational content on the Internet or in libraries, which help to distinguish and classify the types of materials (plastic, cardboard, paper, glass, metals), which will be deposited in the containers with specific colors that determine the correct place to dump waste.

After obtaining that simple information, we can now begin to recycle the aluminum foil, the cardboard that the milk, cereal and eggs come from. We see that the transparent trays and wrappers in which they deliver the vegetables and the glass with which they protect the olives will be separated and placed in the container that corresponds to the color of the specific material. In parallel, the plastic bags in which thousands of products are wrapped can be reused and thus avoid ending up on the grass in the park, on the dangerous road or on the branches of a centennial tree. Let's not forget that cookie packages, faded fabrics, mineral water bottles, newspapers, soda caps, fruit peels, shampoo pots and old magazines, can be used to make ingenious crafts that decorate the room. home, or even be an alternative source of income that helps your family. It is sad that garbage cans are dumped with a series of beautiful containers and huge boxes waiting to be reused by the creative hand of the people.

Although the outlook is encouraging, we wonder what to do with the solid waste deposited in the colored containers? There are people of good judgment who like to separate household waste, but when the urban cleaning truck arrives, they are horrified to appreciate how they mix these classified materials with the trash declassified by the ignorance of the citizens. This generates demotivation in individuals, who really want to assume the ecological commitment, despite the fact that governments refuse to establish environmental policies to preserve the environment. Before throwing in the towel, we ask you to find out in your locality about foundations and non-profit organizations, which are responsible for receiving classified garbage and transferring it to a self-managed recycling center. We warn you that these initiatives are very rare in the cities where we live, although if you decide to look hard for them, you will surely find those admirable sentinels of Gaia.

We saw that changing the environmentally passive way of life, for a long-lived conservationist attitude, allowed us to reinvent the ecological destiny that awaits the future. Now, it is time to become agents of change within our communities, to share green knowledge with the rest of the inhabitants, seeking that they too dare to save electricity, to use drinking water wisely and to practice culture. of recycling. Thus, all together we will plant trees, clean up the rivers and respect the fauna. If our steps leave an indelible positive mark for the new generations of Human Beings, then the hours of sacrifice were worth it.
