Below we present 9 journalistic capsules aimed at illustrating to citizens about the use of the bicycle as a real alternative means of transporting within the cities and surrounding areas. Made by the Pro-bike Committee, a non-profit organization focused on promoting the use of bicycles as a means of urban transport.
"We have seen how, on the one hand, our authorities have ruled out bicycles as a transport option and on the other, citizens, seeing the danger that riding a bicycle represents, opts to pay and squeeze in minibuses or go into debt for years and obtain a vehicle and circulate around the city around the wheel; (being that countries like Canada, the Netherlands, Germany and China have an impressive infrastructure so that cyclists can circulate safely; and cities such as Badajoz Spain, and Bogota Colombia among others are already implementing important works and economic infrastructure that allow cyclists to move from one place to another without putting their lives at risk).
We believe that these capsules progressively dosed in your information medium may help to break the existing paradigm that bikes are for recreation or sports and not for transportation and that the reason why they are not used in a generalized way is because without adequate infrastructure Traveling by bicycle in cities is an activity that endangers the life of those who do it. Although they are not the only solution to the serious problems of roads and pollution in cities, they do represent an important relief to these problems "

Why is the bicycle not used as a means of transport?
"It is unlikely that the public will be encouraged to choose the 'bike' as a means of transport when they are at risk of losing their lives on busy streets."
Martia Lowe (World Watch Institute)
More than 100 million bicycles are manufactured annually in the world, three times more than the number of automobiles, and only in developed countries such as Canada, Germany and the Netherlands, as well as in China, are they taken into account as a means of transport, giving them the same priority in planning and developing road infrastructure as buses and automobiles.
If actions like these were taken in Mexico, it would largely alleviate the important problems that afflict our cities, such as pollution, traffic and stress, and the extremely high cost of the always insufficient road infrastructure.
If people had the option of using the bicycle with a minimum infrastructure that would protect cyclists from the danger of vehicles, we are sure that its use would increase, not only as a recreational activity, but as an alternative, efficient means of transport, economic, fast and non-polluting, whose public works requirement is negligible.

"The inequality of spaces"
No matter how much we spend to build expressways, they will always be insufficient to accommodate the growing number of vehicles entering the city.
Lee Kuan Yu (President of Singapore)
According to a Swiss study, a car that travels at 40 km / hour requires 3 times more space than one that travels at 10 km / hour; While in a lane reserved for private cars used to the maximum (with 4 occupants per car) it does not transport more than 3,000 people per hour, however in this same space, reserved for bicycles, more than 30,000 cyclists can travel.
We are aware that large avenues are necessary in every growing city, however the creation of spaces for alternative means of transport, such as bicycles, the correct planning and distribution of these spaces, helps us to prevent future problems, to relieve congestion, and most importantly, to provide security to the millions of people who already use this means of transport.

What are bike lanes?
It is not about creating a reserved lane for people to ride on Sundays at a certain time, it is necessary to create a network of alternate and safe routes that allows the cyclist to move from one side of the city to the other.
Javier Hinojosa (President Pro Bici)
Bicycle lanes are spaces reserved exclusively for the safe transit of bicycles on one side of the streets, on the ridges or parallel to the access roads to the cities. Its use allows to develop the concept of the bicycle as an alternative means of transport, which is presented as a concrete and feasible solution to the problems of vehicular congestion and environmental pollution; It is a pity that in Mexico when the growth of cities is planned, this type of alternatives are not programmed; on the other hand, an endless number of road works are being developed, with extremely high costs that only temporarily solve the problem for the motorist minority.
Why don't the authorities, instead of spending large amounts of the budget on this type of work, invest in bike lanes that are much cheaper and if they represent a real alternative for the inhabitants? Again we invite our authorities to reflect, as cyclists must also be taken into account.
Types of bike paths:
* Place buffers every 3 meters at a distance of 1.5 meters from the right edge of the street, to circulate in one direction or 2.5 to 3 meters to circulate in both directions.
* On the ridges, leaving ramps at the crossroads and forcing cyclists to use the same traffic lights as cars.
* Parallel, separated from the access roads to the cities

"The cost of transportation"
Although there are no reliable statistics, death by run over occupies one of the highest places within the causes of death in our country.
Ing. Javier Hinojosa (President)
Did you know that there are currently more than 20 million bicycles in our country? And that most of these vehicles are used as a true work tool; And yet they are not taken into account by the authorities of our country, since most of the taxes we pay are used for "road infrastructure." Then, how is it possible that in the face of such demand there are no alternative routes that allow free access to cyclists.
Let us all contribute to live better, society and government; the government for its part, providing us with the infrastructure and road safety that we require and we committing ourselves to the use of alternative means of transportation (bikes) as millions of Mexicans do today.

"Solution to road congestion"
Urban life revolves around the automobile. As we drive around in capsules, our peers become a simple obstacle, whether they are on foot, by car or by bicycle.
The bicycle, a means of transport that to date does not have a safe place to travel in the big cities; It is becoming a great option for people who are fed up with having to spend a large part of their life in their car, having to endure traffic jams and hysteria from other people.
How fast will the bicycle expend transportation options, reducing environmental damage and improving urban life? It depends on how quickly its use moves from individual preference to the public agenda.
Hopefully that day does not take long, because the damage is done to our planet and the beings that inhabit it. It is important that the authorities take this into account and instead of inventing populist measures in which to spend the budget, such as the second floor of the peripheral, that they will only temporarily solve the problem of Mexico City, they become aware and broaden their vision to future in which all of us are taken into account, not just a minority motorist.

"The havoc caused by pollution"
There is no deaf person than he who does not want to hear.
Did you know that a car generates 20 to 25% of the carbon dioxide that accumulates in the stratosphere and increases the greenhouse effect and the progressive warming of the planet, thus causing droughts and floods?
Pollutants rising into the atmosphere and combining with humidity cause acid rain, causing severe damage to forests, acidifying lakes and soils, damaging wildlife and deteriorating buildings.
It is incredible that in Mexico City there are still more than 20 million people "alive", despite the fact that humans are especially vulnerable to air pollution. The effects are peculiarly visible in people with respiratory diseases, the elderly, children and asthmatics being the most vulnerable.
It is estimated that the pollution generated by cars is responsible for more than 20 thousand deaths per year in France, Switzerland and Australia, imagine how many will be in Mexico City! This is the most polluted city in the world.
In Probici our intention is not to eliminate the use of the car, but to encourage the population to use the bicycle as an alternative means of transport, convincing the authorities and citizens to create spaces so that those who wish to travel by bicycle can do so. in a safe way. We know that with actions like these we would be able to reduce the large amount of pollutants that harm our children so much. A better future is worth looking for, don't you think?

"The bicycle, an invention of the space age"
Only fish and migratory birds are more efficient to transport than a man on a bicycle.
Martia D. Lowe (World Watch Institute)
Since the wheel was invented, the bicycle has existed, accompanying man in his evolution, having transformations in its structure, but never in its original concept.
The bicycle for many men has always been an indispensable tool to carry out their work, or to transport themselves from one place to another, uniting isolated communities and in this way keeping them communicated.
In the 60s and 70s, atmospheric pollution from automobile gases increased, which was joined by the serious world oil crisis because of this the popularity of bicycles increased enormously, in many cities lanes were established alternative routes and its own cycling routes, then the problem was solved and society returned to indiscriminate use of the car.
Today the commute from home to work is done many times, faster by bicycle, whether in London, Amsterdam, or Los Angeles. In the short term, bicycles "suspended in space" such as the Gossmaer Albatros (a light pedal-powered airplane) that crossed the English Channel in 1979 are likely to be sold.
The bicycle is not only the oldest invention in contemporary history, it is also the most civilized means of transport of all, since it does not pollute, does not occupy much space and contributes to our health.

"The bicycle, a good alternative for your health"
Take care of the planet, ride a bike. Your children want to breathe, for them do it, their own.
Ramona García (Probici committee)
Did you know that when a car is circulating it affects not only the people who breathe the pollutants produced by the vehicle, but also the driver? Studies have shown that the daily battle against traffic increases blood pressure, lowers tolerance, causes frustration, bad mood and aggressiveness.
A study of 15 "developing" countries found that car accidents are the second leading cause of death, second only to intestinal diseases. Do you think that if a person who is in a traffic jam on the outskirts of Mexico City, saw that on one side there is an alternate route of bicycles, which circulate at a higher speed than that of his car, which is a more healthy, safer and fun, which helps you maintain a good physical condition, more awake and with more vitality; Wouldn't the way you travel immediately change? This would lead to largely solving the congestion problems that afflict our capital and other large cities, such as Guadalajara and Monterrey.
Did you know that the chances of developing cardiovascular diseases for a cyclist are almost nil?

"Mexico - Cuernavaca Cycle Project"
"The Government of López Obrador has not included the bicycle in its Government Plans"
Juan Gutiérrez Srio. Claudia Scheinbaum's staff
(Secretary of the Environment of the Federal District)
There is currently a very interesting project in Mexico City, which is to convert the train route to Cuernavaca into a cyclopath, since the tracks have not been used for more than 5 years. Said project has already been presented to the DF Government. For the Bicitekas, a civil organization dedicated to promoting the use of bicycles.
Creating the bike path has several advantages: on the one hand, it is a project that covers the entire city, from north to south, without creating conflicts between motorists or neighbors; on the other hand, it prevents these spaces from causing new problems of illegal settlements. This cycle path will connect green areas such as the Chapultepec forest with the Dinamos in Magdalena Contreras, in addition to its use as a safe way to travel by bicycle to work or school.
For the capital, it would be a very interesting alternative; Because the bike path would pass next to the peripheral, where there are regularly more traffic jams, if the bike path were created many people would be excited to see how quickly they could reach their destination.
This same project considers the options that can be had to cover costs, such as giving in concessions for stalls of consumer goods, the installation of sponsors' blankets and even the execution of an agreement with the State of Morelos to create a true corridor tourist to Cuernavaca. Ultimately, if managed well, you could get a source of income instead of a cost.
For the DF Government. This is a very good opportunity to promote sports, provide security to an alternative means of transportation and take care of the ecology; all, for a relatively low cost.EcoPortal.net
